  1. The doctor performed a procedure in the hospital where he had to use a ring cutter to remove a metal ring that was around the penis cutting off circulation. What procedure code will I use for this? The instrument used was similar to bolt cutters but actually called a ring cutter.

  2. Since there is no specific code for the cutting of a metal ring around the penis that causes penile edema/loss of circulation, which restricts simple removal, use code 55899 (Unlisted procedure, male genital system) for the cutting of the ring and its removal.

The diagnoses you'll use will likely be 607.83 (Edema of penis), 959.14 (Other injury of external genitals), and E928.5 (External constriction caused by other object).

    I hope this helps.
