  1. The service is being described as a wrap that the doctor applies (to the elbow, knee, etc) that has a gooey substance that would seep into the skin. There is a battery in the device that helps stimulate the medicine. Patient wears this out of the office and takes it off at home after an hour or two.

Is 97033 appropriate? My understanding of iontopheresis is that the typical duration is 10-20 minutes; that it must be directly supervised due to the risk of skin burns; and that topical gels would not be considered iontopheresis.

Can a more appropriate code be recommended based on the description given?

    Thank you!

  2. Medicine wrap and Iontopheresis are different things.Medicine wrap as described above can be well-compared to medical plaster cast. But, to code it correctly, you need to tell me the specific term that your doctor or medical staff mentioned in the treatment plan or treatment performed.
Anyway, 97033 though seems to be correct, but not appropriate in this context.
