  1. Thank you for responding to me about my above caption question. However I am not so sure the 93290 is a good code for that because it is an implantable cardiovascular monitor system. It might have the function but the approach is different. When I look at the CSI Cardiology book, it does not mention anything about the S+I code for that. It is just the 33967 as the insertion of IABP and 33968 as the removal.

My question: Is there actually a code for IABP monitoring and maintenance? How should I explain that to my doctor if he wants to bill that.

    Would appreciate any advice asap.

    Thank you,

    Julie Agus CPC., CCC.

  2. Hello - All the IABP coding references I've found are for insertion or removal, as well. It's not quite on point, but I found a CPT Assistant article (April 2010) titled "Ventricular Assist Devices-Insertion, Removal, Replacement." It focuses on 33975-33981. But it says that for postoperative extracorporeal and intracorporeal VAD insertion care, coders should report the suitable critical care or E/M code, as appropriate. It seems logical to extend that to IABP monitoring.
