  1. I need some clarification with the coding of DeNovo NT cartilage allograft. Per Zimmer, it was suggested to use unlisted code 27599 for the knee. My supervisor, however, is asking why code 27415 osteochondral allograft, be used. I'm not really confident on how to answer her, only that 27415 is for subchondral bone, and DeNovo is for cartilage.
    Thank you,

  2. DeNovo NT is a cartilage allograft, comprised of particulated juvenile hyaline cartilage. The tissue is recovered from juvenile donor joints and is applied to the defect site in a single step surgical procedure with fibrin fixation.DeNovo NT Graft is not an autograft.DeNovo NT Natural Tissue Graft is indicated for the repair of cartilage defects in articular joints. The coding options listed below are commonly used codes. Please consult with your coding resources and payers to confirm appropriate coding options. There may e two options:
    1. I agree with you 27599 is the natural choice. Please note that claims with unlisted codes could be flagged by payers for manual review, and additional documentation may be required of the healthcare provider.
2.27310-The modifier 22, Increased Procedural Service, may be appended to code 27310 should the physician document additional work performed above that described by code 27310.

Please make your supervisior read page 9 of the article http://www.zimmer.com/content/pdf/en-US/2011_DeNovoReimbursementKit_2-16-11.pdf
