  1. Can anyone help with cpt code for craniotomy for biopsy of lesion?

    Thank you.

  2. CPT 61140 is for biopsy of brain or intracranial lesion via burr hole craniotomy.

  3. Check for the approach, is it via craniotomy or burr hole? And exact location of the lesion (intracranial, extracranial, subdural, epidural etc.).

  4. It was open, not burr hole, but the physician didn't remove it, he just sampled the lesion and sent it to pathology.

  5. It will helpful if you can send the operative report. Otherwise for your infomation 61140 is also an open procedure (burr hole)and biopsy is performed here.

  6. Was "Trephine" used for incision on skull? You already said that no burr hole was used. Seems like 61140 could be used. But if the suregon performed only craniotomy with just blade, w/o using any trephine, and then performed exploration too, code 61304 / 61305 based on location of lesion.
