  1. Can CPT 39503 be used for repair of a congenital diaphragmatic hernia in a 4 month old patient? The patient presented in respiratory distress. The procedure was carried out by a 7 cm left subcostal incision. The code description states "neonatal" which would have an age restriction but a more appropriate code was not found. Both 39540 & 39541 are trauma related. Thank you.

  2. Regardless of the age, if the type of hernia is congenital, even if the repair happened during infancy, the code can be assigned 39503 as there is no fitting code for this hernia repair.
It will be wrong to assign code 39540 and 39541 here as this is not a traumatic hernia.
