  1. What cpt would be used for the administration in this case?
just hung D5W in admitting ordered for a borderline BS on someone who took a 1/2 dose of her insulins this am.

hydration or therapeutic and what code to use????

  2. Intravenous drip is a continuous infusion of fluids (with or w/o substances / medications) with an IV access device. In this case, the reason for the IV administration of D5W (5% Dextrose solution) is not for checking dehydration but to maintain the BS level within control limit (Pt. took less of insulin dosage in the AM). Therefore, this Dextrose drip is for therapeutic purpose and can be billed using code 96365 (for up to 1 hour). If the drip was given for more than an hour, do code the add-on CPT +96366 (for each additional hour).

  3. As for the supply & administration of the dextrose (D5W) is concerned, you can additionally code the HCPCS code J7042, along with the CPT 96365.
