  1. How do I code abdominal washout?

  2. It is better to get the OP notes to code this one. Miscoding of this particular one can cause a huge loss of revenue.
Was the wash out done by doing laparotomy, opening the abdominal cavity? Or was it performed by using a needle and catheter that drains the abdominal fluid? If abdominal lavage was done by opening the abdominal cavity, you can go with 49000 / 49002, as the actual lavage, or washing, is a bundled component of the exploratory laparotomy. Select lavage code 49080, when it is done from outside, using abdominal trocar, catheter etc. (peritoneocentesis, abdominal paracentesis).

  3. Also the physician can perform the abdominal wash with an endoscope (EGD) so for that you can report 43235. But still it would be best if you could provide the Op note.
