News Brief: New CCI Edits Do Not Affect Pulmonologists
- Published on Thu, Nov 01, 2001
The Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) version 7.3, which took effect Oct. 1, does not affect pulmonology practices. The CCI edits are put out quarterly by CMS and contain two categories of edits. The first category, comprehensive versus component codes, identifies codes bundled into their more comprehensive procedures. The second category, mutually exclusive codes, lists code pairs that typically would not be reported together during the same session on the same date.
Within the CCI edits, superscripts of either "1" or "0" are included with each code pair indicating whether it can be overridden with a modifier. If the code pair has a superscript of "1," it can be overridden with modifier -59 (distinct procedural service) when appropriate. If a code pair has a superscript of "0," it cannot be overridden. Codes 94656 and 94657 have a "0" superscript because they cannot be reported on the same day.
The next CCI, version 8.0, will be effective Jan. 1, 2002. Pulmonology Coding Alert will report on any relevant changes in the December issue. For a subscription to the CCI edits, call the National Technical Information Service at 800-363-2068 or 703-605-6060.
